Will I be able to teach Yoga when I'm finished?

To date, there are no licensing or "official" requirements to teach Yoga in most countries. Though some efforts are now being made by certain self-proclaimed regulatory organizations to set "standards" for and to "register" Yoga teachers, thus far these standards are primarily centred around the physical components of Yoga, including only basic academic understanding of some of its philosophies and concepts.

Though we applaud the ambition to teach Yoga, we maintain that humanity ultimately stands to benefit the most from teachers who exhibit the highest standards of knowledge and experience - a standard which is unfortunately lacking in today's Yoga environment, where many "Yoga teachers" fail to lead a yogic life in even the most basic of ways.

It is unfortunate that many today have chosen to teach Yoga with a very limited understanding and experience of this vast science. Becoming a Yoga teacher is not a right, but a great honour and a tremendous responsibility. In order to teach Yoga, one must not only "know Yoga", but live it - fully and completely. In order to guide others along this often difficult and demanding path, one must have successfully walked that ground themselves first.

Although your Yoga education through the Yoga Correspondence Course is extensive and among the most well-developed available - and although you may well indeed have a broader range of experience in, and understanding of Yoga than many who "teach" it today - this does not necessarily mean that you will yet be qualified or capable to teach. Therefore we do not offer the distinction of "Yoga Teacher" upon its completion.

Through your study of the Yoga Correspondence Course at International Yogalayam, you'll undoubtedly come to understand the vastness of this ancient and profound science, and recognize the efforts necessary to fully understand and master its teachings. Through patience, perseverance and hard work, we challenge students to set themselves the highest standards of personal study and practice before endeavouring to teach Yoga to others.
